Rain in a Cup Experiment

(this is an example student post)

 Scientific Method
1. Problem:
  • How does it rain?
2.  Background Research:
  • Rain is a type of precipitation.
  • Rain falls from the sky.
  • Rain comes from clouds.
  • Rain is a type of liquid.
  • Rain is a part of the water cycle
3. Hypothesis:
  • I think the food coloring with drop through the shaving cream and fall like rain.
4.  Experiment:
  • Supplies:  plastic cup, water, shaving cream, food coloring.
  • Steps:
    • Fill the plastic cup with water.
    • Spray a layer of shaving cream on the top of the water in the plastic cup.
    • Drop five drops of food coloring on top of the shaving cream in the plastic cup.
    •  Observe the food coloring to see what it does in the shaving cream and water.
5. Results:
  •  The shaving cream acted like a cloud in the cup of water.  The shaving cream cloud held the food coloring until it was full.  Once the shaving cream cloud could no longer hold the food coloring, the food coloring began to fall the rain.
  • Shaving cream = Cloud
  • Water = air
  • Food coloring = rain
  • We have learned that clouds hold the rain and once they are full and can no longer hold the heavy raindrops the rain starts to fall.
